CNIS and INSS in 2026: How to Check and Correct Your Employment Records

The CNIS (Brazil’s National Social Information Registry) of the INSS (Brazil’s National Social Security Institute) holds the employment records and contributions that set the initial monthly amount of every social security benefit in 2026.
What the CNIS Is and Why It Determines Your Benefit
The National Social Information Registry (Cadastro Nacional de Informações Sociais), known as the CNIS, is the official database maintained by the INSS under Law No. 8.213/91 and Decree No. 3.048/99. It records employment relationships, payments made by self-employed and voluntary contributors, contribution salary bases, and the periods in which the insured person received a benefit. The agency uses this information as its single source for calculating contribution time, the minimum contribution requirement (carência), and the initial monthly benefit amount (renda mensal inicial).
In practice, the CTPS (Brazil’s Work and Social Security Card) is no longer the primary document for granting a benefit. The eSocial system unified the submission of labor and social security data and feeds the CNIS directly, so the CNIS statement itself has become a central piece of social security planning. Any discrepancy between your CTPS and the statement tends to be resolved on the basis of the CNIS, and it is up to you, as the insured person, to present strong documentary proof when you want to correct the record.
Before you apply for retirement, a survivor’s pension, a temporary disability benefit (auxílio por incapacidade temporária), or the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (Continuous Cash Benefit), it is worth auditing your statement carefully. Checking it in advance helps you avoid denials, shortens the time between your application and the grant, and lets you gather documents from your employers while the companies are still active.
How to Get Your Full Statement Through Meu INSS
Access to the statement is free and entirely digital. You need a gov.br account at the silver or gold level, because the bronze level does not allow sensitive social security queries. You can authenticate through facial biometrics, bank validation, or a digital certificate, depending on the options available in the Meu INSS app or on the gov.br/inss portal.
Inside Meu INSS, simply find the “Extrato de Contribuição (CNIS)” option in the services menu. The system offers two versions: a simplified one, suited to a quick look, and a detailed one that shows all the technical indicators. For an audit, we always recommend downloading the detailed PDF version, because it keeps the full chronological order, with the reference period (month and year), the remuneration, and the source of each entry.
Correcting the CNIS logically comes before applying for any benefit, because the initial monthly amount is calculated from the statement, not from your work card.
The basic reading follows three main columns. The reference period shows the month the contribution refers to. The remuneration shows the contribution salary base used in the calculation. The source tells you whether the data came from an employment relationship, an individual payment slip, a voluntary contributor, or a benefit period. This is the spreadsheet where inconsistencies start to appear, and you can compare them against the documents in your personal files.
CNIS Indicators and What Each Code Means
Next to the employment records and remuneration figures, you will see technical codes that flag pending issues. Among the most frequent, the IREM indicator points to remuneration above the contribution ceiling or below the minimum wage of the time. The IEAN indicator signals that the company’s authorization is pending in the INSS’s Specific Registry. The PEXT indicator records concurrent periods that need to be analyzed together. The PREM-EXT indicator flags remuneration dated after the employment relationship ended, often tied to severance payments.
Not every indicator prevents a benefit from being granted. Some work only as an internal alert for the agency, while others require you to submit documentation to clear the issue. The PVSO indicator, for example, usually appears when employment records overlap, and it can be resolved by submitting pay stubs that show you worked simultaneously for different employers.
The correct classification of each code is described in INSS Normative Instruction No. 128/2022 and in later operational manuals. We recommend comparing each indicator with the documents in your personal files before you prepare your correction request, because an organized submission shortens the review time.
The Most Common Discrepancies and How to Spot Them
The first significant discrepancy is missing employment records. They occur when the employer did not submit information to the former CAGED (General Registry of Employed and Unemployed Workers), to the RAIS (Annual Social Information Report), or, more recently, to eSocial. You need to check, record by record, whether the hiring and termination dates in the CNIS match your CTPS and your Termination of Employment Contract form (Termo de Rescisão do Contrato de Trabalho).
Zero remuneration is the second critical category. It shows up as a reference period filled in with blank or zero remuneration, even though a salary was actually paid. It is often seen with employers whose CNPJ (corporate taxpayer ID) has been deregistered, who are in bankruptcy, or who went through long periods of tax noncompliance. In these cases, the documentary proof needs to be stronger, with pay stubs, payroll ledgers, and, if possible, bank statements from the period.
Overlapping periods involving concurrent activities also call for attention, especially if you held a registered job while also contributing as a self-employed worker. The correct classification of your contributor status must reflect the reality of each arrangement, or the system may invalidate one of the payments. The situation of a rural worker in a family subsistence farming arrangement is equally delicate, since the proof requires a validated self-declaration and related documents.
Requesting a Correction (Adjustment of Employment Records and Remuneration)
The administrative route for correcting your statement is the service called Acerto de Vínculos e Remunerações (Adjustment of Employment Records and Remuneration), available in Meu INSS under the CNIS updates menu. You select the period to be corrected, attach the scanned documentation, and wait for the agency’s review. The agency uses centralized processing units to reduce response time.
Accepted documentation includes the original CTPS with all entries legible, contemporaneous pay stubs, payroll ledgers provided by the employer, declarations on company letterhead showing the CNPJ and a signature, the DIRF (Withholding Income Tax Return), the RAIS, and, in specific situations, agreements approved by the Labor Court. For rural workers, the list of documents in Article 106 of Law No. 8.213/91 guides the self-declaration and the submission of documents such as a producer’s notebook, a lease agreement, and a certificate from the union. Under Precedent 149 of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), witness testimony alone is not enough. It only strengthens the review when there is a reasonable beginning of documentary evidence.
If the administrative request is denied, you may appeal to the CRPS (Brazil’s Social Security Appeals Council) within 30 days of being notified of the decision. You can also build your social security planning on the updated statement and use the calculation tools available to simulate the impact of each correction before filing the final application. Professional follow-up on the case and prior organization of your documents reduce the risk of new issues and speed up the grant.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the INSS’s CNIS and what is it for?
The CNIS, short for National Social Information Registry (Cadastro Nacional de Informações Sociais), is the INSS’s official database. It brings together employment records, contribution salary bases, payments made as a self-employed or voluntary contributor, and benefit periods. It is the basis for calculating contribution time, the minimum contribution requirement, and the initial monthly benefit amount, which makes it a central piece of any social security law analysis in Brazil.
How do I check my employment records and contributions in the CNIS?
You check them in the Meu INSS app or on the gov.br/inss portal, using a silver or gold gov.br account. In the Extrato de Contribuição (CNIS) service, you download the detailed PDF version and compare the reference period, remuneration, and source of each entry against your CTPS and pay stubs. Any discrepancies you find need to be documented before you request a correction.
What documents support a request to correct the CNIS?
The INSS accepts the original CTPS, pay stubs, payroll ledgers, employer declarations on letterhead showing the CNPJ, the DIRF, the RAIS, and agreements approved by the Labor Court. Documents from the period in question carry more weight in the review. Witness testimony only reinforces the file when there is a reasonable beginning of documentary evidence, as set out in Precedent 149 of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).
