The division of a couple’s assets when the relationship ends, whether through divorce or the dissolution of a stable union (união estável, a recognized form of cohabitation similar to a common-law marriage). What each person receives depends on the property regime the couple chose. In general, only the assets acquired during the relationship are divided. The division can be made by agreement between the parties or decided by a judge when they cannot agree.
