Possession (posse) is the actual exercise of one or more of the powers an owner has over a thing, such as using and maintaining a property, even if the person does not hold the title of ownership. A person in possession can defend it, through specific legal measures, against anyone who threatens it or wrongfully takes it away. Possession held for a certain period of time and under certain requirements can even lead to acquiring ownership through usucapião (a form of adverse possession).
