A document in which a person states how they want their property distributed after death. It allows the author to leave the disposable portion of the estate (the share not reserved by law for forced heirs) to anyone they choose, as long as the rights of those forced heirs are respected. A will may also include provisions recognizing children and appointing a guardian. Brazilian law provides for several forms of will, such as the public will, drawn up at a notary’s office (cartório), and the private will.
