Contract termination (rescisão contratual) is the ending of a contract before its scheduled end date, because one of the parties has breached it or for another reason allowed by law or by the agreement itself. The party harmed by the breach may seek to end the relationship and, where appropriate, compensation for losses. It differs from a distrato, a mutual agreement in which both parties consent to end the contract. It usually involves settling amounts already paid and any penalties.
