The GPS (Social Security Payment Slip) is the form that self-employed workers, MEIs, voluntary contributors, and individual contributors use to pay contributions to INSS (Brazil’s National Social Security Institute). You can issue it for free through the Social Security portal or through Meu INSS.
What the GPS Is and Who Uses It
The Guia da Previdência Social (GPS), or Social Security Payment Slip, is the payment document used to pay contributions to INSS when those contributions are not automatically deducted from a paycheck. It is the payment instrument for individual contributors (self-employed workers, independent professionals, service providers), voluntary insured persons (homemakers, students without income), MEIs (individual microentrepreneurs) who want to top up their contribution rate, and insured persons who pay overdue contributions.
Employees with a formally registered work card do not need to issue a GPS. The employer deducts the contribution directly from the paycheck and passes it on to INSS. For these workers, the contribution appears on the pay stub and is recorded automatically in the CNIS (National Registry of Social Information).
The GPS is due on the 15th of the month following the reference month. If the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the due date moves up to the previous business day. Paying after the deadline triggers a penalty of 0.33% per day, capped at 20%, plus interest at the accumulated SELIC rate.
How to Issue the GPS Through the Social Security Portal
The Social Security portal (previdência.gov.br) and Meu INSS (meu.inss.gov.br) both let you issue the GPS for free. The process is simple, and you do not need to register in advance if you only want to generate a slip for a current payment.
To issue the GPS on the Social Security portal: go to the portal and look for the option “GPS, Guia da Previdência Social”; select “Emissão de GPS” (GPS issuance); enter the contributor’s CPF (Brazil’s individual taxpayer number), the reference month and year (the competência), the payment code, and the amount. The system generates a PDF with a barcode, which you can pay at any bank, lottery outlet, or through a banking app.
Using the wrong code on the GPS can prevent the contribution from being recorded in the CNIS, which hurts your contribution time and grace period count for a future benefit.
The most common payment codes are: 1007 (individual contributor with an employment relationship), 1104 (individual contributor without an employment relationship, self-employed), 1163 (voluntary insured person), and 1295 (household employer). Using the wrong code can cause problems with how the contribution is recorded in the CNIS.
GPS Through Meu INSS: Step by Step
The Meu INSS app (available for Android and iOS) also lets you issue the GPS. After you log in with your Gov.br account, go to “Outros Serviços” (Other Services) and then “Emitir GPS” (Issue GPS). The system already has the insured person’s data, which makes filling in the fields easier.
One advantage of Meu INSS is that it records the reference month correctly and reduces the risk of a wrong payment code by suggesting the code that fits the insured person’s profile. Once the slip is generated, you can share the PDF directly to your bank’s app.
For overdue payments, the system automatically calculates the penalty and interest owed on the original amount. This feature is especially useful for self-employed workers who missed the payment deadline and need to bring contributions from earlier months up to date.
GPS for Self-Employed Workers: 2026 Amounts
An individual contributor who works for themselves can pay at a rate of 20% on the declared earnings, within a range between the minimum wage (R$ 1.621,00) and the contribution ceiling (R$ 8.475,55). The minimum contribution in 2026 is R$ 324,20 (20% of R$ 1.621,00), and the maximum is R$ 1.695,11 (20% of R$ 8.475,55).
If you choose the reduced rate of 11%, which does not count toward retirement based on contribution time, the minimum contribution is R$ 178,31. Under this option, the insured person is entitled only to old-age retirement, disability benefits, maternity pay, and survivor’s pension for dependents.
To understand how the contributions recorded in the CNIS affect the amount of your retirement benefit, and how to check that all your payments are correct, see the firm’s guide on how to correct employment records and errors in the CNIS.
Proof of Payment and How the GPS Differs From Other Payment Slips
Each paid GPS generates a bank receipt with mechanical or digital authentication, and that document is the material proof that the contribution was actually paid. Keep your receipts, because it can take up to 90 days for the payment to be reconciled in the Cadastro Nacional de Informações Sociais (National Registry of Social Information), especially when you pay at lottery outlets or bank correspondents. You can check which months have been paid through the CNIS statement, available on Meu INSS. Any discrepancy between your receipt and the statement must be reported to the Receita Federal (Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service) through a GPS rectification process.
The GPS is not the same as the DAS-MEI, the monthly payment slip specific to individual microentrepreneurs, whose Social Security contribution is set at 5% of the minimum wage. Nor is it the same as eSocial Doméstico, the system that issues a single slip covering INSS, FGTS (Brazil’s Severance Indemnity Fund), IRRF (income tax withheld at source), and the other charges tied to a household employment relationship. Each type has its own payment code, and using one slip in place of another prevents the correct recognition of your contribution time and your insured status.
For overdue payments covering periods before you joined the system, Article 28 of Law 8.213/1991 applies: individual contributors and voluntary insured persons can pay overdue contributions only when they already have a prior link to the Regime Geral (the General Social Security Regime), or the Receita may reject the payment. If you have never contributed before, you must first register and, only after your first on-time payment, can you make up open months, subject to the limits of statute of limitations and forfeiture under the regime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay the GPS at a lottery outlet, or only at a bank?
You can pay the GPS at any partner bank, at Caixa Econômica Federal lottery outlets, through your bank’s app (by copying the barcode), or through internet banking. You cannot pay directly by Pix. Payment must be made with the barcode or through the specific Social Security slip option available in some banking apps.
What happens if I pay the GPS with the wrong code?
The contribution may be recorded incorrectly in the CNIS or may not be recorded at all. In some cases, the Receita Federal system can identify and correct the problem automatically. In others, you need to request a transfer or refund of the amount and make a new payment with the correct code. You can file the correction request through Meu INSS or by calling 135.
Can I pay overdue INSS contributions in installments?
INSS does not offer installment payment of the GPS to individuals who are catching up on overdue contributions on their own. Overdue amounts must be paid slip by slip, month by month, with the legally required additions. For companies with Social Security debts, there are specific installment programs, such as Refis, when available.
